Flash Back Friday: Spice Girls

If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends, make it last forever, friendship never ends…I was about 7 or 8 years old the first time I heard these lyrics on the radio. Wannabe is, hands down, one of my favorite song and still is. Friendship is the understatement for this song. It really makes you feel like you’re a Spice Girl. I knew this song before I even knew who the Spice Girls were. I adore the beat to the song and every time I hear it, it puts me in a good mood. I remember buying their CD and listening to it EVERYDAY! I would blast Wannabe multiple times throughout the day. I had that song on repeat, and I am surprised the back button did not break. My friends and I had every word to Wannabe memorized from the laugh in the beginning to the Zig a Zag Ahhh. We even made up dance moves to the song and would sometimes dress up to perform them. We would perform them for ourselves, families and friends. We performed in our living rooms, bedrooms and on the front lawn with our hairbrush microphones in hand.

There is one performance I remember the best . It was on at a father / daughter camping trip, the daughters had to perform a skit on Saturday night and we were going to perform Wannabe (of course)! We practiced Friday night, Saturday morning and afternoon, and then performed it that night. It was so much fun. Each girl was a Spice Girl. I was Sporty or Posh depending on my mood, but I can rocked the pout or track pants when I need to. Wannabe’s lyrics are about the value of friendship and that is what spoke to me as well as the Zig a Zag Ahhhh line.  Now that I am older I understand the lyrics more and the message of the song is about friendship and closeness between friends. If you want to be with someone, you have to get along with his or her friends too. Nothing can break that bond between true friends, i.e., “Friendship never ends…” I still love listening to Wannabe and I still sing and dance along to it. Every time I listen to it now I remember those times as kid and all the fun times this song brought and still does. I listened to this song while I was exercising and getting ready to go out. It gave me this rush and burst of energy and I usually sing along too. Even when I played it at home, I couldn’t sit still while this song plays. Though, it is arguable that this song is sexual. While reading the lyrics, I mean it is kind of obvious… the chorus is “If you wannabe my lover you’ve got to give.” Another part in the lyrics I found sexual was “We got Em in the place who likes it in your face, you got G like MC who likes it on E, Easy V doesn’t come for free, she’s a real lady.” G likes it on E? Well I’m pretty sure that is about drugs. I mean they are called the SPICE girls, not the sweet girls.

A POP of Color

Peter Max is a multi-dimensional artist who became famous in the 1960s and early 70s for his pop artist (psychedelic) style and posters that converge to the mass media. Max gave the Art Nouveau style of the early 1900s a psychedelic makeover with a bright, acidic palette of hot pinks, yellows and greens. His bold colors and uplifting images have inspired others.

It doesn’t get more American than neo – psychedelic artist Lisa Frank. She could be the cousin to psychedelic artist Peter Max, except her art was made for young girls during the 1980′s and 1990′s. Lisa’s artwork consists of neon rainbows, tigers, unicorns, pandas, dolphins and surfing penguins. Lisa Frank creates a cute and freaky world with images that populated school desks nationwide as spiral notebooks, stickers, pencils and erasers. I’m convinced that Peter Max is a close relative of Lisa Frank

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia really know how to “Shake It Off.”

Nurses, Patients, parents, a NFL Player and even a pooch help celebrate and spread awareness for Child Life Month with a little help from Taylor Swift and her hit song “Shake It Off.”

The video shows countless smiling faces moving to the beat, showing off their moves, and shaking off their worries. The video was created by The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, fabulous Child Life team,  made up of Child Life Specialists, Child Activity Coordinators, Music and Art Therapists, teachers and dedicated volunteers (who I once called my second family).

Look closely and you will see NFL Player, and Camden, New Jersey native Devon Still and his daughter Leah even make an appearance around the 1:20 mark, as Leah received her cancer treatments at CHOP.

The hospital released an adorable video of its young patients, staffers and one notable athlete lip-syncing and dancing to the hit Taylor Swift song. Their touching tribute has already garnered more than 237,903 views since it was posted on YouTube on Thursday.

The Child Life team is part of the The Child Life, Education and Creative Arts Therapy department. The department uses education, preparation, and supportive activities to help lessen stress, and assist children and their families cope and adjust with their experience at the hospital. Child life specialists work to make the experience more fun for children, but also really help with the hard stuff. They giving children new ways to express themselves when it’s hard for them to find the words to talk about how they’re feeling, like art, music and more. Almost all of the supplies and tools used by child life specialists are provided by generous donors, or philanthropic support.

Piece By Piece By Kelly Clarkson

I just received Kelly Clarkson’s new album Piece by Piece. I have been a fan of Kelly Clarkson since her American Idol days. ( Fell like I just aged myself a little 🙂 ) I think Piece by Piece is one of Kelly’s best albums!!  It is has so many different sounds and styles, sounds people don’t expect from her, sounds that her other albums haven’t had. I feel like this is what she has been the album she has trying to make forever when it comes to style and sound.  Kelly’s other albums all have been amazing and they all have been pretty diverse, this one goes in so many directions. I am OBSESSED with it. You NEED to check it out NOW. Trust me and before you know it you will be sign along with it.
